Big Q Cassette Classic this week is from Godely & Creme, with “Cry”.
Kevin Godely & Lol Creme were in the band 10 CC. When they left, they started putting out music and videos together. They were so good at the video aspect they ended up putting out videos for a lot other artist, including Duran Duran, Yes, The Police, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, and Wang Chung. But it was there ground breaking video for the song “Cry” in 1985 that made the most noise. The process was called “Soft Wipe”. It was a video transition to get from one picture to another.
The process itself wasn’t new, but the use of it in a music video was. It might look a little silly with all the new technology out today, but in 1985 you couldn’t take your eyes off the screen. It was truly captivating. During our all-night poker games, I always folded my hand when this video came on because I new I’d be to distracted to focus on my cards. (not that it would’ve mattered) The song itself didn’t explode out of the speakers as it only reached number 16 on the charts, but I liked it, and I was proud to have captured it on my Cassette Classic.
